BREEDING MONITORS AND OTHER LIZARDS.
|
Breeding monitors like all lizards takes time ,knowledge, and patience on the behalf of the breeder. The most important
eliment in breeding is husbandry.Without the right houseing, temperature, and food supply to simulate thier natural conditions
it may be very difficult to accomplish production. In the past many breeders have simply given up for many reasons but this
is the most common one.
It is impossible for me to cover all the aspects and procedures on breeding monitors here on this site.So if you have
any questions on breeding the species your working with feel free to contact me at tarpit@bellsouth.net to talk and Ill help
you out in anyway i can.
The following brief tips are for all of you to concider when thinking about working, keeping,or breeding monitors. If you
have never bred reptiles before this may be to big of a project for you to start with. Can I suggest starting with something
easier to work with and breed like bearded dragons or leopard gecko`s first ??
If not alright then read on !

Your first priority should be space and cageing.Without it you should not attempt breeding or even keeping monitors unless
thier of the dwarf varieties.Research the species your working with and try your best to simulate thier natural enviroment
the best you can includeing thier seasonal temperature changes, rainy seasons, and droughts.
You can find all the seasonal temps and climate changes online throughout the world to help you out as well as liturature
in print available through libraries, and books on the subject that are available.
Most liturature that you`ll find is vague at best on breeding monitors so you`ll have to look hard.Krieger publishing
in Palm Bay florida distributes and sells alot of publications pertaining to a variety of lizards and snakes that are quite
resonable to afford, and very helpful with info on breeding and husbandry.
I have worked with alot of monitors and Ive had some great success and miserable failures, but I learned from it all and
Im willing to share them with all of you if your seriously interested in breeding monitors and lizards.

Second is food supply.
It is very important to try to give your monitors a balanced diet consisting of food groups that they are acustomed to
from thier country of orgin. Many monitors are heavy bird and fish eaters as well as bugs, snakes, lizards, and rodents. Many
breeders make a big mistake not researching this topic and rely on the commercial rodent and bug diet as thier primary food
intake.BIG MISTAKE ! Many monitors from different contries very rarely get rodents as a staple diet and many are daytime feeders
that dont even encounter these nocturnal creatures in the first place. With this in mind dont rely on pet store or retail propaganda.Do
the research and find out the proper foods and diet for the species your working with.

If this is your first time trying to breed ESPECIALLY MONITORS..Let me slap you on the back and shake your hand !
You have now entered the TWILIGHT ZONE and the unknown and unforseen future of these last earth bound Dinosaurs that we
know and love.We who work with them are in a class all our own and are true adventurers who want to explore the ground breaking
world of monitor breeding and propigation. To develope new techniques and share new information on these mysterious beasts
from the past is a blast and a very important aspect of thier survival.Thier history is facinating, illusive, and addicting
to say the least. To work with these beasts is always a thrill to me and to see other breeders successes is very exciteing
and rewarding as well.I truly wish you all the best of luck and hope to meet you at some reptile show or talk to you online
sometime in the near future....Good luck ,and watch out for that tail...OUCH !!!!!!! .....Sincerely,Dan
